The Initiative was founded in 2018 as part of Xbox Game Studios. Led by Darrell Gallagher, who previously was the head of Crystal Dynamics, the studio’s goal is to create “AAAA” games. The studio has attracted several great talents from Insomniac, Rockstar, Bioware, Santa Monica, and Naughty Dog. At The Game Awards 2020, The Initiative revealed that they were working on a Perfect Dark reboot. Billed as a “secret agent thriller set in a near-future world,” it looks like various ecological disasters have also torn the world apart. In a developer interview released at the same time as the reveal trailer, the studio notes that while Perfect Dark is a first-person shooter, it’s about more than just shooting. The Initiative confirmed that yesterday, announcing that they are partnering with Crystal Dynamics to develop Perfect Dark, explicitly recognizing their work on Tomb Raider. Perfect Dark update! We are partnering with Crystal Dynamics, the world class team behind character-driven games such as Tomb Raider, to bring this first-person spy thriller to a new generation. pic.twitter.com/EiqjU99wMa — TheInitiative (@TheInitiative) September 24, 2021 The studio added to that Tweet with another, stating, “The teams couldn’t pass up a chance to work together. We’re still early in development, but incredibly excited to use this unique opportunity to deliver on the vision for Perfect Dark!” While we don’t know what role exactly Crystal Dynamics will have in the development, it’s a piece of exciting news for sure. In addition to their successful reboot of Tomb Raider, they also released Marvel’s Avengers last year, for which they continue to provide content. (Most recently, the War for Wakanda expansion.) It doesn’t sound like they’re done with either game, though, writing in a Tweet, “We’re thrilled to add Perfect Dark to our development efforts alongside Marvel’s Avengers and Tomb Raider.” Are you excited to see what these two studios can do, focused on one game?
