Holy travel restrictions, Batman. The roster for participating exhibitors at the annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco continues to dwindle as Hideo Kojima, Facebook, Playstation, and now EA have all decided not to attend or have opted to have a drastically reduced presence. The decisions have all come as mounting fears from the spread of coronavirus (aka COVID-19) have steadily grown over the course of the last few weeks.  In a statement to PCGamer.com, an EA representative said:

“Having closely followed the global situation with Coronavirus and with the recent escalation of cases in new regions, we have decided to take additional steps to protect the wellbeing of our employees including the restriction of all non-essential travel,” the statement provided to us reads.

“As a result we are also cancelling our official participation at GDC and limiting attendance to other events. We are continuing to monitor the situation and will adjust guidelines to our employees as we feel is appropriate.”

In a similar move last week, Sony canceled the company’s official presence at PAX East due to similar concerns. The companies absences will have a large effect on GDC 2020 as less than a month remains until it kicks off March 16th and goes until the 20th. Coronavirus fears have and will most likely continue to impact future events, not to mention the gaming industry in total.

Nic Stevenson, sometimes called AnthroMetal, is a writer, producer, broadcaster and lover of video games and metal. He's been gaming since he was a wee lad with the Sega Master System way back when and, aside from a 5-year romp through the academic halls of anthropology, followed the gaming industry religiously. He is an avid lover of metal music and sometimes will even play his guitar or sing if necessary. There are no games or genres outside of his purview. Really anything he could play to boost his gamerscore on Xbox Live. You can find him there, usually playing something old because of an ever-increasing backlog, sometimes playing something new when he's able. He has tattoos of BioShock, dead space and borderlands 2 so far, with plans to add as many as he can for those games deemed worthy. He may run out of space. Look, he really really likes video games okay? Okay. Also, he streams sometimes on twitch.
