With so many Eevee evolutions to choose from, you want to make sure that you get your favorite one. Here is a guide on how to evolve your Eevee in Pokemon Go.

Eevee is definitely one of the cuter original Red/Blue/Green generations of the Pokemon games and has been recently promoted to starter status in the Pokemon: Let’s Go series. But the coolest thing about Eevee is how it evolves. Eevee can evolve into more different than other Pokemon species so far.

In the original Pokemon games, Eevee evolved based on factors including special items (like evolutionary stones in Pokemon Sun and Moon), the happiness level, moves or time of day. In Pokemon Quest, stats influenced the evolution. In Pokemon Go, Eeveelution is handled in a way not seen yet.

Avid Pokemon Go trainers know evolution is all about candy. Players get candy by walking, catching and transferring Pokemon to ‘buy’ the evolution. In Eevee’s case, it costs about 25 Eevee candy. And if you have not caught an Eevee yet, you can hatch one from 5km Pokemon eggs.

Once you have enough Eevee candy to get the evolution, don’t press the button yet! You need to decide which Eeveelution you want first. There are seven different options from different Pokemon generations.

Generation one Vaporeon
Jolteon
Flareon
Generation two Umbreon
Espeon
Generation three Leafeon
Glaceon

Eeveelutions explained:

Eeveelutions are meant to be a random process in Pokemon Go. Once you press evolve, you have a one in seven chance of getting the evolution you want. With that being said, there are some useful shortcuts and cheats to get around the random aspect. Here is how that works:

First, you need to evolve an Eevee by spending 25 candy, evolving it into one random Eeveelution. You can actually force a specific Eeveelution by renaming your Eevee to a special nickname. The entire thing is an easter egg nod to the classic set of Eeveelutions found in the Pokemon anime television show. It is simple, just change the nickname of you Eevee before you hit evolve and follow the tips below.

Here are the names and the Eevee evolutions:

Eevee (#133)Original formNormal
Vaporeon (#134)RainerWater
Jolteon (#135)SparkyElectric
Flareon (#136)PyroFire
Espeon (#196)SakuraPsychic
Umbreon (#197)TamaoDark
Leafeon (#470)LinneaGrass
Glaceon (#471)ReaIce
  • Espeon and Umbreon: you need to build a relationship with that Eevee by walking with them as your Buddy Pokemon, around 10km should work. Once you’ve done that, evolve in the day for Espeon and night for Umbreon.
  • Glaceon and Leafeon: These Pokemon can be caught with the new special lures in Pokemon Go. The snowy Glacier Lure gives you a chance of catching Glaceon. The Mossy Lure gives you a shot at Grass-type Leafeon.

An important thing about this cheat is it only works once per Eeveelution. Once you have renamed one Eevee as Tamao to get Umbreon, you will only be able to get another Umbreon through ‘natural’ means.
