In the video game industry, the Battle Royale genre has become a more reoccurring theme, after Player’s Unknown Battleground and Fortnite blew up in popularity. Today, we see a plethora of battle royale games including familiar series, like Call of Duty, tackling the mode with their own twist. For those of you not familiar with a Battle Royale, because you’ve been living under a rock, it’s a mode that has an X amount of players dropped in a large map without weapons or armor, and having them all killing each other until only one (or one team) is left.

At Pax South 2019, I had the opportunity to experience the next level of the Battle Royale genre as its steps into the VR realm with Big Box VR’s Population: One. In a meeting with one of the game’s developers, Storm Foley, I had a first hand on Population: One’s gameplay.

With the VR feature, you really become emerged in the game’s world and in the action. Going through the motions of grabbing the weapon, loading it and firing as if it was real life can really make the difference for those that love the genre and maybe even a few that don’t.

A really cool feature of the game is that you can climb anything. Yes, if you want to feel like Spiderman, this game will give you that. You can climb buildings, towers, and even light poles. In your arsenal of tricks can also utilize a glider when falling or jumping off any elevated space just by extending your arms. (Warning) Be aware of your surroundings not to hit your host, monitors, table, walls, a passing child, etc. when extending to glide.

Like is not VR counterpart, Fortnite, you will be able to build. The building mechanics is a very useful tool in this game.  You will be able to build walls and ceilings as a strategic move to cover your self and counter an enemy. Before you ask, yes, you can climb your construct and even make a sniper nest.  The game has a 24-player match and can be played solo or in squads ranging from 2 – 4 players.

The game will be cross-play compatible with HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality. If you want to sign up for the private beta, sign in here:
