Hey, paisanos! A new Super Mario animated adventure is coming your way. Nintendo and Illumination, the studio that brought you the Despicable Me series, will be working together to bring the Mario brothers to the big screen.

This movie is Nintendo’s next initiative to make use of their character IPs. As part of that effort, Nintendo’s Representative Director Shigeru Miyamoto himself will be co-producing this movie. He’ll be joined by the founder and CEO of Illumination, Chris Meledandri, as his joint co-producer. Both Nintendo and Universal Pictures will fund this film, and Universal Pictures will be responsible for distributing it.

In Nintendo’s quarterly financial briefing, Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima offered brief comments in addition to the announcement:

Further announcements on details such as release dates will be made at a later date. We look forward to providing further information about the release timing for this movie that we hope everyone will enjoy. As a part of our effort to expand Nintendo IP beyond video games, we look forward to bringing smiles to people around the world through this movie.

What would a proper Super Mario movie even look like? While we doubt this version of Mario is from Brooklyn, we’re curious to see what’ll come out of this collaboration. Let us know about your ideal Mario movie in the comments.
