Are you in a fix for XCOM-like strategy gameplay? The Bearded Ladies, a small new developer comprised of former Payday and Hitman series staff, have announced Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden— a game that’ll fit just that need.

The team describes Mutant Year Zero as a tactical adventure game “combining the turn-based combat of XCOM with story, exploration, stealth, and strategy.” The game notably will feature real-time exploration elements.

As the title suggests, the title will be set in a post-nuclear war world where only mutants survive. Our three protagonists are a mish-mash of odd mutant characters: Dux, a crossbow-wielding duck; Bormin, a toughened boar; and Selma, a human-like woman who can transform her skin into stone. The three characters will be able to earn new mutations and transform further as you play the game.

The cinematic trailer suggests that they’ll be fighting against a group of robotic foes. Unfortunately, there’s no gameplay footage; however, the cutscenes do a good job of conveying the game’s core concept.

Although this is just a brief first look, you can expect this title to be quite impressive. Its team features an interesting ensemble of creators, including Ulf Andersson, the original designer of Payday.

Publisher Funcom will take Mutant Year Zero to the Game Developers Conference, which happens in mid-March. There, we’ll get our first official gameplay preview.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is due this year for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
