IGN has released 13 minutes of yet unseen gameplay from Yooka-Laylee’s colourful New World Capital Casino stage. In it, Yooka and Laylee do a variety of tasks in the casino themed world, ranging from shattering glass to retrieve a giant playing card to transforming into a helicopter so you can carry a knightly pig to a storeroom within 40 seconds. So- standard procedure for Banjo-Kazooie successor, then. The first task is to retrieve the card, which requires Yooka and Laylee to travel through a small obstacle course of slopes and glass windows, using Laylee’s screech ability to trigger platforms and fighting back very agitated looking decks of playing cards. Don’t blame them though, maybe life just dealt them a poor hand. Laylee seems to actually have a few abilities at her disposal, as she’s later seen using a screech in a wide radius to trigger multiple switches, and blowing a bubble to enable Yooka and her to breathe underwater. The stage also features a variety of little minigames, like slot machines and a ball dropping game. It’s probably safe to assume there’s a few more in this stage that weren’t shown in this gameplay demo. The stage itself is quite vast, and honestly reminds me a fair bit of some of the levels in Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts due to the scale. The timed helicopter escort mission probably contributes to that feeling. It seems to reach back into Rare’s legacy a fair bit, as it also features a mine cart section that calls back to the Donkey Kong Country games. Yooka-Laylee will release on the 1st of April, coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Although a Wii U version was originally planned, it has been cancelled in favour of a Switch version. The release date on the Switch version is yet to be confirmed, however.
