While at PAX South I had the opportunity to play a fun game by Surprise Attack Games called Super Mutant Alien Assault. Joined by my colleague Vanessa, we grabbed some controllers and jumped right into the chaos.

Super Mutant Alien Assault follows three fleets of spaceships as they attempt to flee a doomed earth, carrying the last humans in cryostasis. However, as they travel to find a new home they are being pursued by aliens and you must take back your fleet to help save humanity.

Go get’em little guys!

The game features some unique, colorful levels that are always different offering a variety of ways to play. Each level offers a different range of difficulty, some small and others large with platforms. Each round has an objective you must achieve with your partner as well as eliminating the enemies. You play as a droid which have a wonderful little automatic primary weapon to take out the mutant aliens that are assaulting the ship. It’s a small metal donut that can be thrown like a disk to take out hostiles. It sounds simple, but the disk puts out some major damage and can take out enemies with a single hit. Other enemies, however, do need more than on hit to die.

In each level there is a weapon drop box that has a selection of randomized drops that will give your hero anything from a shotgun to a plasma gun. These weapons will give you a bit more firepower when facing tougher baddies. Additionally, each level has random grenade drops which give you a little damage boost when you’re stuck in a corner without a weapon.

Each level includes three rounds then a boss battle which I can safely say was more challenging than I had expected. In our time playing the game Vanessa and I never beat the final boss on the first round!

As Vanessa and I played, we soon realized how hard the game truly is. We tried to work as a well formed team, however, the aliens proved to be more than capable of kicking our well toned asses. Super Mutant Alien Assault is fast paced, fun, and over-all addicting. Each time we lost we needed to play again. Although I was undoubtedly the MVP of our little duo, it’s clear that no one will make it out alive if you don’t work together.

Key Features of Super Mutant Alien Assault

  • Intense And Brutal Action – rapid fire levels give you no rest as hordes of enemies arrive, hell-bent on your destruction. Clear the objective quickly and be sure to kill each enemy before it has the chance to mutate into a bigger, nastier version of itself. Take a tiny breather and then it’s on to the next room.

  • Dance With Death – in the tight confines of the space freighter, standing still is not an option. Your ability to dodge around enemies is as important as your aim. Survival requires quick thinking and rapid reflexes

  • Different Every Time – each single-screen level is randomised, drawing on a pool of platform layouts, objective types and enemies as well as which vending machines will be present. You’ll never know which weapons or grenades will spawn in the vending machines whilst crate drops containing special abilities, sidearms, perks and defense moves are also randomised, adding further to the mind-boggling possible combinations.

  • Overflowing With Unlockables – a wealth of weapons, sidearms, explosives, special abilities, perks, defensive moves and character skins awaits you. Each new unlockable joins the melting pot of random ingredients, increasing your options but also the need to master each individual element and the way they combine with each other.

  • Play Solo Or With A Friend – take on the mutant hordes by yourself or team up in local co-op. Two player adds further complications to master as you must be careful to avoid friendly fire from explosives and will have to share/fight over item and health pack drops.

  • Keyboard And Controller Support – fully customisable controls using gamepads, keyboard or a combination of the two.

Although no official date was given, Super Mutant Alien Assault is slated for PC and consoles.
