Amidst all of the hectic days of our everyday lives, it is easy to lose sight of the plight of the less fortunate. In an effort to raise awareness for the awful situation of the South Sudanese people, UNICEF put together a fake video game concept that features a South Sudanese girl as the main character.

Elika’s Story tells the tale of a 7 year old girl trying to survive in the South Sudan after her mother dies from cholera and her brother is killed trying to protect her. During her journey in the fake game, Elika escapes her deadly confines, but her infant baby brother is grazed by a bullet.

Once Elika makes it to the refugee camp, things don’t get much better. The camp is over populated, filled with sewerage, and lacking food. At the end of the pitch, Elika must decide if she should become a prostitute to feed her baby brother.

The video of the pitch is very staggering, and you can see people leaving the presentation before they find out this pitch is actually a way for UNICEF to bring this situation to light. After the fake pitch is over, Mari Malek, a South Sudanese refugee, comes on stage and reveals that the game is fake, but the situation is very real. She and may other refugees have struggled and are currently struggling to survive in the South Sudan.
