Blizzard debuted their newest IP, Overwatch, at BlizzCon today with two epic trailers: one CG, one gameplay. Here’s the setup: an earth of the near future is on the brink of collapse. A Justice League-esque team of super soldiers form The Overwatch to turn the tides of chaos and restore order to the world. With the world saved and the Overwatch no longer needed it faded away into myth. Until evil came calling the heroes out of retirement. The CG trailer is of epic, mind blowing caliber as you would expect from a company like Blizzard. Watch it below and experience the pure popcorn glee of a ten-year-old seeing their first big animated blockbuster. But what is the game actually like?

The gameplay trailer will remind you of a certain team-based multiplayer game from Valve, Team Fortress 2. Six heroes go up against six super villains in arenas set all across the globe. You’ll duke it out in the streets of London and rumble in the pyramids of Egypt. Blizzard’s vision of the near future is one where everything’s been given a make-over by Apple Computers: all very shiny and technological. The heroes and villains are each bringing their own unique skill set to the fight; there are quick and crafty runner-gunners as well as stealthy snipers. You also have your heavies and engineers throwing down serious weight or sentry turrets respectively. There’s also some healers to fix you up on the fly. Rather than copy Valve outright, from the look of it Blizzard has tuned and balanced the ensemble of Overwatch to stand out on its own.

“Overwatch is our take on a vibrant, near-future universe with amped-up characters and action-packed team-based gameplay,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “With every new Blizzard game, we look at our favorite aspects of a genre and put our own spin on things. Our goal with Overwatch is to create an awesome FPS experience that’s more accessible to a much wider audience while delivering the action and depth that shooter fans love.”You can find out more and sign up for the 2015 beta here.
