BioWare has stated that Mass Effect 4 will be in the same universe as the original trilogy and will mention the events of the game, but will not take place in the same period. Shepherd will not make an appearance and players will also unlikely see the companions in the new game. When asked about returning characters, Aaryn Flynn, the head of BioWare’s Edmonton and Montreal branches, stated there would “definitely be returning races.”

From the footage revealed at the E3, there seems to be a krogan and a human in the trailer, which you’ll see below.

On GameTrailers, Flynn was asked how the series will continue and where it will be set. Flynn answered, “I can’t get into that too much. We’ve got a really cool idea for how we’re going to carry on – keep the trilogy separate but at the same time give a bunch of nods to fans who enjoyed the trilogy in the past.”

The series will get a fresh start from the ending of the last game with this addition from BioWare.
