Rumored earlier this week, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel has now been officially announced.

Does the title of the game have you a little confused? The story for this third entry in the franchise will take place between Borderlands and Borderlands 2. It is being developed by 2K Australia in collaboration with Gearbox.

The game revolves around the Hyperion space station above Pandora and features a new set of characters that are led by Handsome Jack before he became the villain that we know and love in Borderlands 2. The four new playable characters are all people that we’ve met in the series; Athena, Wilhelm, Nisha and Fragtrap.

New gameplay features will be added to the game such as having to deal with low gravity and the lack of oxygen.

Interestingly enough, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel wont be coming to your shiny new next-gen consoles. It will be releasing on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC this fall. 2K Australia assures us that this is a brand new, full game and players should expect content on par with Borderlands and Borderlands 2.
