Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Legacy of the First Blade is more for fans of the franchise than newcomers to the series. Focusing on a separate adventure from the core campaign players dive into the ancient history of the Assassin Order and get roped into another fight against a powerful Order. The boss battles help negate much of Legacy of the First Blade’s shortcomings but much of the DLC focuses on barebone missions that those who’ve played the entire campaign know full and well.

From the Beginning

Legacy of the First Blade has players teaming up with a notorious Assassin, Darius. The wielder of the first hidden blade and known by the Assassin Order as one of the greatest members of the organization players are roped into searching to eliminate a new Order called The Order of the Ancients. What follows is a series of similarly structured missions from the main campaign as the player tracks down and kills these members.

While it’s clear Ubisoft is saving much of the game’s context for the future episodes some information would’ve been welcomed. The main issue being the Order of the Ancients who come off as an off-brand organization from the main campaign’s organization. Blanket statements and generic dialogue are used to explain their actions and existence without making them feel distinct.

Rise and Repeat

The missions involve the same kill key targets, infiltrate areas, and locate specific items in areas the player most likely explored. If you have completed the campaign many the areas you visit within Legacy of the First Blade should be familiar and if you’re wearing end-game gear the enemies will fall very easily to your attacks. You can increase the difficulty in the menu but unless you play on hard expect enemies to fall easily. It also doesn’t help that much of the loot you obtain are no-wear as powerful as the end-game items.

The bosses fair much better, with interesting fights against formidable foes. Each boss is distinct with a unique ability that makes the fights much more intense. It’s predictable who you’ll find but the battles themselves require a lot of planning and pattern recognization to succeed.

A Solid Edifice

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Legacy of the First Blade has promise, but it needs to expand and distinguish itself. The boss battles do offer excitement after threading through similarly structured missions but the main antagonists need to be expanded on. Legacy of the First Blade will give those who’ve sunk weeks into Assassin’s Creed Odyssey to return but expect to more of the same.
