Capcom’s marketing director, Antoine Molant, said in a recent statement at Gamescom that Capcom wants Street Fighter V to be the number 1 fighting game in competitive gaming.

“eSports is booming at the moment and we want to make sure that Street Fighter is at the forefront of that.” He said, according to MCV, “Right now – in terms of fighting games – we’re not at the level of League of Legends, but that’s where we want to be. We want to be the headline name in fighting eSports games.”

This isn’t the first time they have expressed interest in growing in the eSports world. Back in February, commercial director Andy Davis said that Capcom had been looking at the scene with SSV, teasing fans with, “We have big plans there,” before mentioning how the fighting genre is relatively underrepresented.

Capcom has already made a name for Street Fighter with Capcom Pro Tour, which will have a prize pool of $500,000 this year, and the EGX ranking event in London. A fighting game fan myself, it will be interesting to watch their plans unfold as 2016 rolls around and Street Fighter V hits the shelves.
